The Complete Book of Foaling
Karen E.N. Hayes, DVM, MS
Howell Book House, 1993
ISBN 0876059515
If you have only one book about foaling, let this be it. I used this book to
attend my first foaling and, don't laugh, actually had it in the barn with
me and referenced it in between stages of labour. It really put my mind at
ease to know that, first off things were progressing normally, and secondly
that I hadn't forgotten to do any of the things that I was supposed to do at
each stage.

Blessed are the Broodmares
M. Phyllis Lose, VMD
Howell Book House, 1991
ISBN 0876058489
This is a completely updated and revised version of the classic first
edition published in 1978.
There is a vast quantity of information in this
book, but if I had one complaint it would be that
trying to go back and find one piece of it later can be a bit difficult.
The author makes up for this by the quantity and quality of information included and by
her anecdotes, which can be by turns entertaining,
scary, hilarious, heart-warming, or heart-breaking. This woman has had over
thirty years of experience in equine pediatrics, which gives her a deep
resevoir of personal history to share with us.

Howell Book House, 1998
ISBN 0876052863
Another updated and revised edition by Dr. Lose, this one of her 1987
classic on the foal's first year.
This book could be subtitled "All the Things that Can Go Wrong with Your
Foal". Sensitive readers may find all the pictures of things
that have gone wrong with other people's foals upsetting, but knowledge is power, and
early recognition of warning signs could save your foal, so take a deep
breath and study all the photos and text.
There is a large amount of
information in this book which will greatly contribute to your education as
a horse breeder and foal caretaker.

The Pony Breeder's Companion
Caroline Nesbitt
Howell Book House, 1995
ISBN 0876059965
This is a great book! I like everything about this book, and I found it totally
"by accident" one day when I accompanied my Mom to the used book store. I was
waiting for her to pick out what seemed like six months worth of reading
material when I spied this book on the shelf. I picked it up and immediately
had to buy it when I saw that it had a chapter on Fjordhorses.

Mares, Foals and Foaling
Friedrich Andrist
J.A. Allen & Co. Ltd., 1962
ISBN 0851310532
I've gotten a lot out of this handy little book, which
I first heard about from another Fjord breeder. She told me
about the useful wheel in the back of the book, used for calculating
mares' due dates. The wheel also shows other important dates in addition to
the most probable foaling date, including the limits within which a normal
full-term birth may be expected, and the extreme early and late dates at
which live foals have been born.

The Stallion
James P. McCall, Ph.D
Howell Book House, 1995
ISBN 0876059876
This contemporary book is written by a real expert in the field. The
author has stood and managed over 300 (!) stallions, as well as being an
instructor of horse management classes at three major universities.
Despite McCall's university background there is nothing dry or
academic about this book. All the information is presented in a very lively
and engaging style of writing and the book is full of anecdotes about the various
stallions he has worked with in his over 30 year career. I particularly
enjoyed his recounting the first time he did a collection of semen from a
20 hand 2 ton Belgian stallion. I won't spoil it for you, but it was hilarious.

The Horse-Breeding Farm
Larryann C. Willis
Breakthrough Publications, 1985
ISBN 0914327003
Another classic, this one whose first edition came out in 1973. This book
could be a text-book for a horse-management class (and may well be!)
it is that comprehensive, detailed, well-organized, and tending to the
dry side.
This book is geared towards the management of the larger horse-breeding
farm, and as such,
